Mandya (ಮಂಡ್ಯ) is a district in southern Karnataka, India, between Bengaluru and Mysuru. Its headquarters is Mandya city. Known for sugarcane farming and sugar production, the district forms part of the fertile Cauvery basin. Irrigation from the river and the Krishna Raja Sagara reservoir supports much of its agriculture.
Kannada is the main language, and village traditions, festivals and farming shape local life. Agriculture, sugar mills, dairy farming, trade and services underpin the economy. Important landmarks include the historic island town of Srirangapatna, associated with Tipu Sultan, the pilgrimage centre of Melukote, and the Brindavan Gardens beside Krishna Raja Sagara dam. Folk arts and regional food traditions contribute to its cultural identity.
Residents commonly focus on reliable irrigation, Cauvery water sharing, crop prices and timely payments to sugarcane growers. Other civic priorities include drinking water, road maintenance, public transport, healthcare, education and employment opportunities, alongside protecting rivers and managing growth around towns.
