Mandsaur (मंदसौर) is a district in northwestern Madhya Pradesh, India, in the Malwa region along the Rajasthan border. Its administrative headquarters is Mandsaur city. The district is known for agriculture, particularly regulated opium cultivation, and for its historical and religious heritage.
Hindi and Malvi are widely spoken, and local culture reflects Malwa’s traditions, festivals and trading connections. Farming and agricultural markets support much of the economy, with soybean, wheat, garlic and other crops grown alongside licensed opium poppy. Prominent landmarks include the Pashupatinath Temple on the Shivna River in Mandsaur city and the historic fort at Bhanpura. The district also has connections to the ancient Dashapura settlement.
Common civic concerns include reliable irrigation, groundwater availability, crop prices and access to agricultural markets. Residents also care about roads, public transport, healthcare and education across towns and villages. Urban priorities include drinking water, sanitation, waste collection and the condition of the Shivna River.
