Mahasamund (महासमुंद) is a district in eastern Chhattisgarh, India, bordering Odisha. Its administrative headquarters is Mahasamund town. The district is known for its agricultural landscape, forested areas and the archaeological heritage of Sirpur, an important historic settlement near the Mahanadi River.
Rural communities make up much of the population, including tribal communities with distinctive cultural traditions. Chhattisgarhi and Hindi are widely used, alongside other local languages. Farming, especially paddy cultivation, supports many livelihoods, while forest produce, trade and small businesses also contribute to the economy. Sirpur’s Lakshmana Temple and Buddhist remains are prominent landmarks, attracting visitors interested in architecture, archaeology and religious history.
Common civic concerns include dependable irrigation, fair returns for crops, rural roads and access to healthcare and education. Residents also care about drinking water, sanitation, employment opportunities and reliable public services. Forest conservation, human–elephant conflict in affected areas, and balancing heritage tourism with local needs are other important issues.
