Lohit (लोहित) is a district in eastern Arunachal Pradesh, India, with its headquarters at Tezu. Named after the Lohit River, it is known for its river valleys, forested hills and connections between the eastern Himalayas and the plains of Assam. Its landscapes and religious sites draw pilgrims and visitors.
The district is home to Mishmi communities and other groups, with varied languages, festivals and traditions. Agriculture, horticulture, trade and government services support the local economy. Tezu is an important administrative and commercial centre. Parshuram Kund, on the Lohit River, is a major Hindu pilgrimage site, especially during Makar Sankranti. Local markets and community celebrations reflect the district’s cultural diversity.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, access to healthcare and education, drinking water and electricity. Flooding, erosion and landslides can affect settlements and transport links. Residents also have a stake in livelihood opportunities, forest conservation, waste management and tourism that respects local communities and fragile environments.
