Latur (लातूर) is a district in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, India, with its administrative headquarters in Latur city. Known for agriculture, trade and education, it lies on the Deccan plateau near Karnataka. The district is also remembered for the devastating 1993 earthquake centred near Killari, which shaped local approaches to reconstruction and disaster preparedness.
Marathi is the main language, alongside other languages spoken by the district’s diverse communities. Farming and agricultural markets underpin much of the economy, with soybean, pulses and sugarcane among important crops. Latur city attracts students through its colleges and coaching centres. Notable heritage sites include Udgir Fort, Ausa Fort and the Kharosa caves.
Water availability is a recurring civic concern, particularly during droughts. Residents also care about irrigation, farm incomes, employment, roads, public transport and access to healthcare. In growing towns, reliable drinking water, sanitation, waste collection and well-planned development are important public priorities.
