Lahaul & Spiti (लाहौल और स्पीति) is a high-altitude district in Himachal Pradesh, India, bordering Ladakh and Tibet. Its two main regions, Lahaul and Spiti, are known for dramatic Himalayan landscapes, remote villages, Buddhist monasteries and long, harsh winters. Keylong is the district headquarters, while Kaza is Spiti’s main administrative centre.
Communities maintain distinct local languages and traditions shaped by Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism. Farming, horticulture, livestock rearing, tourism and public services support livelihoods. Potatoes, peas and barley are important crops in suitable areas. Notable landmarks include Tabo and Key monasteries, Chandratal lake and the Atal Tunnel, which has improved road access to Lahaul.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, winter connectivity, healthcare, education and mobile networks. Residents also face water shortages, waste-management pressures and the effects of growing tourism. Protecting fragile mountain ecosystems, preparing for landslides and floods, and balancing development with local culture remain important priorities.
