Kurukshetra (कुरुक्षेत्र) is a district in Haryana, northern India, known for its association with the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita. Its administrative headquarters is in Kurukshetra city, closely linked with the historic town of Thanesar. The district lies along important road and rail routes connecting Delhi with northern states.
Agriculture, particularly rice and wheat cultivation, supports much of the district’s economy, alongside trade, education and pilgrimage-related services. Hindi and Haryanvi are widely spoken, with Punjabi also present. Kurukshetra University is a major educational institution. Prominent landmarks include Brahma Sarovar, Sannihit Sarovar and Jyotisar, traditionally associated with Krishna’s teaching of the Bhagavad Gita. Religious gatherings and Gita celebrations draw visitors.
Common civic concerns include reliable water supplies, drainage, sanitation, road maintenance and public transport. Residents also care about farm incomes, irrigation, groundwater conservation, employment and access to education and healthcare. Managing pilgrimage crowds while protecting sacred sites and water bodies is another local priority.
