Korea, also spelled Koriya and locally written कोरिया, is a district in northwestern Chhattisgarh, India, adjoining Madhya Pradesh. Its headquarters is Baikunthpur. The district is known for its wooded hills, rural landscapes and historical links to the former princely state of Korea. Its boundaries changed when Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district was created in 2022.
The population includes tribal communities alongside other rural and urban residents. Hindi, Chhattisgarhi and local community languages shape everyday life, while festivals, weekly markets and traditional arts sustain cultural ties. Agriculture, forest-based livelihoods, trade and public services support the economy, with coal mining important to the wider region. Baikunthpur’s palace heritage, local temples and surrounding forests contribute to its identity.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, road maintenance, healthcare access and school facilities, especially in remote villages. Residents also care about employment, irrigation, forest rights and conservation. In growing settlements, sanitation, waste collection and dependable electricity remain practical priorities.
