Koraput (କୋରାପୁଟ) is a district in southern Odisha, India, with its headquarters in Koraput town. Set in the Eastern Ghats, it is known for forested hills, valleys, waterfalls and rich tribal heritage. Its varied landscape supports farming and makes it an important destination for nature and cultural tourism.
The district is home to diverse Adivasi communities, each with distinctive languages, festivals, crafts and traditions. Odia is widely used alongside local languages. Agriculture, forest produce, trade and industry support livelihoods; major industrial centres include Damanjodi and Sunabeda. Notable landmarks include the Jagannath Temple at Koraput, often called Sabara Srikhetra, and Deomali, Odisha’s highest peak.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads and transport, drinking water, healthcare and access to education in remote settlements. Residents also care about employment, fair prices for farm produce, land and forest rights, and the environmental effects of mining and industry. Preserving local cultures while improving public services remains important.
