Kolar (ಕೋಲಾರ) is a district in southeastern Karnataka, India, bordering Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Its headquarters is Kolar city, east of Bengaluru. The district is widely associated with the historic Kolar Gold Fields, although large-scale gold mining has ceased. Its landscape includes rocky hills, farmland and networks of traditional water tanks.
Kannada is the principal language, alongside Telugu, Tamil and Urdu in local communities. Agriculture, dairy farming, silk production, trade and small industries support livelihoods, while links with Bengaluru influence employment and development. Farmers grow vegetables, fruit and other crops for regional markets. Notable landmarks include the Kolaramma and Someshwara temples in Kolar city and the mining heritage of Kolar Gold Fields.
Common civic concerns include dependable drinking water, groundwater depletion, tank restoration and agricultural irrigation. Residents also care about roads, public transport, sanitation, healthcare and schools. Employment opportunities, former mining communities’ welfare and managing industrial growth are important local issues.
