Kodagu (ಕೊಡಗು), also known as Coorg, is a district in southwestern Karnataka, India, in the Western Ghats. Its headquarters is Madikeri. Bordering Kerala - Keralam, it is known for coffee plantations, forested hills, heavy monsoon rains and the headwaters of the Kaveri River at Talakaveri.
The district is home to Kodavas and several other communities, with distinct languages, food traditions and festivals. Kodava culture has strong associations with ancestral homes, agriculture and military service. Coffee cultivation, pepper growing, tourism and related services support the local economy. Well-known places include Madikeri Fort, Abbey Falls, Bhagamandala and Nagarahole’s wildlife landscapes.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, reliable public transport, healthcare access and waste management, especially around tourist centres. Residents also face landslide and flood risks during intense monsoons. Forest conservation, human–wildlife conflict, water security and balancing tourism development with farming and local livelihoods are important public issues.
