Khordha (ଖୋର୍ଦ୍ଧା) is a district in eastern Odisha, India, encompassing Bhubaneswar, the state capital. Its administrative headquarters is Khordha town. The district is known for its connection to the Paika Rebellion of 1817, its historic temples, and its role as a centre of government, education and commerce.
Odia is the principal language, and local culture includes temple festivals, traditional food and performing arts. The economy combines public administration, information technology, education, trade and agriculture. Major landmarks include Bhubaneswar’s Lingaraj Temple, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, and Dhauli, associated with Emperor Ashoka and Buddhist heritage. Rural communities and expanding urban neighbourhoods give the district a varied social landscape.
Common civic concerns include reliable water supply, drainage, waste collection, traffic congestion and public transport. Residents also care about affordable housing, employment, healthcare and education. Managing urban expansion while protecting heritage sites, farmland and natural areas is an important district-wide challenge.
