Kathua (कठुआ) is a district in southeastern Jammu and Kashmir, India, bordering Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Pakistan. Stretching from plains near the Ravi River to the hills of the Jammu region, it is often described as a gateway to Jammu and Kashmir. Kathua town is its administrative headquarters.
Dogra heritage shapes much of the district’s cultural life, with Dogri widely spoken alongside Hindi and other languages. Agriculture, trade and manufacturing support the economy, with industrial activity concentrated around Kathua and nearby areas. Notable places include Jasrota Fort, the temples of Billawar and Basohli, a historic town known for its distinctive miniature painting tradition.
Residents’ civic concerns commonly include reliable drinking water, road maintenance, healthcare, education and employment. Industrial pollution and waste management matter in developing urban areas, while farmers need irrigation and market access. Border communities face security concerns, and hill settlements often need better transport links and public services.
