Kakching (কাচিং) is a district in the southern part of Manipur’s Imphal Valley, in northeastern India. Its headquarters is Kakching town. Created in 2016 from part of Thoubal district, it is known for its agricultural landscape, rice cultivation and connections to the wider valley’s markets and settlements.
The district has a strong Meitei cultural presence alongside other communities. Meiteilon, also called Manipuri, is widely spoken, and festivals, sports and community organisations play important roles in local life. Farming, small businesses, trade and public services support livelihoods. Kakching Garden, on a hill near the town, is a familiar visitor attraction, while temples, markets and surrounding fields shape the local landscape.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, reliable water and electricity, drainage and flood management, healthcare and education. Farmers also depend on irrigation and access to markets. Employment opportunities, environmental protection, public safety and peaceful relations among communities are important issues for the district’s future.
