Jodhpur is a major city in western Rajasthan, India, on the edge of the Thar Desert. Often called the Blue City for the blue-painted houses in parts of its old town, it is known for its historic forts, desert setting and Marwari heritage. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, it was the capital of the former kingdom of Marwar.
Marwari and Hindi are widely spoken, and local culture is reflected in folk music, festivals, textiles and distinctive food. Tourism, handicrafts, furniture-making, trade and services support the economy. Mehrangarh Fort dominates the skyline, while Jaswant Thada, Umaid Bhawan Palace and the markets around the clock tower are prominent landmarks.
Common civic concerns include reliable water supplies, summer heat, road maintenance, traffic and waste management. Residents also have a stake in preserving historic neighbourhoods, improving public transport and ensuring that tourism and urban growth bring benefits without placing excessive pressure on local infrastructure.
