Imphal West (পশ্চিম ইম্ফল) is a district in Manipur, northeastern India, covering part of the Imphal Valley. It includes much of Imphal, the state capital, and surrounding settlements and farmland. The district is known for its role in Manipur’s administration, commerce and cultural life.
Meitei communities form a large part of the population, alongside other communities. Manipuri dance, festivals, sports and weaving contribute to local identity. Government services, retail trade, small businesses and agriculture support livelihoods. Notable landmarks include the women-run Ima Keithel market, Kangla and the historic Sagolband Bijoy Govinda area, associated with traditional boat racing.
Residents commonly care about reliable water and electricity, road maintenance, drainage, waste collection and access to healthcare and education. Flooding in low-lying areas, traffic congestion and employment opportunities are recurring concerns. Public safety, social harmony and the effects of Manipur’s conflict on everyday life also remain important civic issues.
