Howrah (হাওড়া) is a district in West Bengal, India, on the western bank of the Hooghly River, opposite Kolkata. It is known for its railway connections, engineering industries and close ties with the Kolkata metropolitan area. Beyond its densely built urban belt, the district includes smaller towns, villages and agricultural land.
Bengali is widely spoken, and the population includes communities drawn by industrial and transport-related work. Durga Puja and other religious and neighbourhood festivals shape cultural life. Foundries, manufacturing, trade, transport and agriculture support livelihoods. Prominent landmarks include Howrah Bridge, Howrah railway station, Belur Math and the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden in Shibpur.
Common civic concerns include traffic congestion, road maintenance, drainage and seasonal waterlogging. Residents also care about reliable drinking water, waste collection, industrial pollution and access to healthcare and education. Employment, public transport and balanced development across urban and rural areas remain important district-wide issues.
