Hooghly (হুগলি) is a district in southern West Bengal, India, named after the Hooghly River along its eastern side. Its headquarters is at Chinsurah. The district is known for fertile farmland, industrial towns and historic riverside settlements shaped by Bengali culture and European trading connections.
Bengali is the main language, and agriculture, manufacturing, trade and services support livelihoods. Paddy and potatoes are important crops, while jute mills and other industries line parts of the river corridor. Notable landmarks include the Hooghly Imambara, Bandel Church and the temple at Tarakeswar. Chandannagar’s French heritage and Jagaddhatri Puja are prominent features of local cultural life.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, drainage, drinking water, sanitation and reliable public transport. Residents also care about industrial employment, farm incomes, access to healthcare and education, and flood preparedness in vulnerable areas. River pollution, heritage conservation and managing urban growth are important issues across the district.
