Gwalior (ग्वालियर) is a district in northern Madhya Pradesh, India, with its administrative headquarters in Gwalior city. It is known for its hilltop fort, royal heritage and major contribution to Hindustani classical music. The district includes a large urban centre alongside smaller towns and agricultural villages.
Hindi is widely spoken, with regional speech and traditions reflecting the surrounding Gwalior–Chambal region. Farming, trade, manufacturing, education and public services support local livelihoods. Gwalior Fort, Jai Vilas Palace and the tombs of musician Tansen and Muhammad Ghaus are prominent landmarks. The Gwalior gharana and the annual Tansen music festival remain important parts of its cultural identity.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, sanitation, waste collection, road maintenance and traffic management. Residents also care about affordable healthcare, school quality, employment and public transport. Rural communities need dependable irrigation and market access, while heritage conservation and orderly urban growth are important district-wide priorities.
