Gomati (গোমতী) is a district in southern Tripura, India, with its headquarters at Udaipur. Named after the Gomati River, it is known for its lakes, green hills and religious heritage. Udaipur, a former royal capital, remains an important centre of administration, commerce and pilgrimage.
The district is home to Bengali-speaking communities and Indigenous peoples, including Tripuri communities, with Kokborok among the languages spoken. Agriculture, rubber cultivation, small businesses and tourism support local livelihoods. The Tripura Sundari Temple at Udaipur is a major pilgrimage destination, while Neermahal, the palace in Rudrasagar Lake near Melaghar, lies in neighbouring Sepahijala district. Gomati’s own attractions include Udaipur’s lakes and the rock carvings at Chabimura.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads and public transport, drinking water, healthcare and access to education, particularly in rural and hilly areas. Residents also have a stake in flood preparedness, river and lake conservation, waste management, agricultural support and employment opportunities.
