Gir Somnath (ગીર સોમનાથ) is a coastal district in southern Gujarat, India, on the Arabian Sea. Its headquarters is Veraval. The district is best known for the Somnath temple at Prabhas Patan, a major Hindu pilgrimage destination, and its connections to the Gir landscape, home to the Asiatic lion.
Gujarati is widely spoken, and local life reflects coastal traditions, religious pilgrimage and rural livelihoods. Fishing, seafood processing, agriculture and tourism are important to the economy. Veraval’s fishing harbour is a major centre of activity, while Somnath’s temple complex and nearby sacred sites draw visitors from across India. Coastal settlements and inland villages give the district a varied character.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, sanitation, waste management and road maintenance. Residents also have stakes in fishing livelihoods, coastal protection, healthcare and education. Managing pilgrimage crowds, improving visitor infrastructure and balancing development with wildlife conservation are recurring priorities across different parts of the district.
