Ganjam (ଗଞ୍ଜାମ) is a coastal district in southern Odisha, India, bordering Andhra Pradesh and the Bay of Bengal. Its district headquarters is Chhatrapur, while Berhampur is its largest urban and commercial centre. The district is known for Gopalpur’s seaside setting, the Rushikulya river mouth’s olive ridley turtle nesting grounds, and connections to Chilika Lake.
Odia is the main language, with Telugu also spoken, reflecting the district’s border location. Agriculture, fishing, trade, weaving and migration-linked incomes support local livelihoods. Berhampur is especially associated with silk textiles. Folk performance traditions such as Danda Nata have a strong presence, while Tara Tarini temple and Gopalpur are prominent landmarks and visitor destinations.
Common civic concerns include cyclone preparedness, coastal erosion, reliable drinking water, sanitation and road maintenance. Residents also care about irrigation, healthcare, education and local employment. Protecting fishing livelihoods, turtle habitats and wetlands while improving infrastructure remains an important district-wide priority.
