Ganderbal (गांदरबल) is a district in the Kashmir Valley of Jammu and Kashmir, India, northeast of Srinagar. Its administrative headquarters is Ganderbal town. The district is known for the Sind River, mountain scenery and Sonamarg, a major tourist destination and gateway to high-altitude routes.
Kashmiri language and cultural traditions shape everyday life, alongside the customs of Gujjar and Bakarwal communities. Agriculture, horticulture, livestock rearing, tourism, trade and public services support livelihoods. Notable places include Kheer Bhawani temple at Tulmulla and the lakeside settlement of Manasbal. The Central University of Kashmir adds to the district’s educational role.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water and electricity, road maintenance, healthcare access and employment opportunities for young people. Residents also have a stake in flood preparedness, protecting rivers and lakes, and managing tourism-related waste and traffic. Balancing infrastructure development with fragile mountain environments remains an important local issue.
