Gadchiroli (गडचिरोली) is a district in eastern Maharashtra, in the Vidarbha region, bordering Chhattisgarh and Telangana. Known for its extensive forests, rivers and significant Adivasi population, it has its administrative headquarters in Gadchiroli town. Much of the district is rural, with settlements spread across forested terrain.
Gond and other tribal communities shape local culture through their languages, festivals and traditions. Marathi and Gondi are among the languages spoken. Farming, particularly paddy cultivation, forest produce collection and public services support livelihoods, while mining is also economically important. Notable landmarks include the historic Markanda temple complex near Chamorshi, on the Wainganga River.
Residents’ civic concerns include reliable roads, healthcare, schools, drinking water and mobile connectivity, especially in remote villages. Forest rights, access to livelihoods and the environmental effects of mining are important issues. Seasonal flooding and long-running Maoist-related conflict also affect public safety, mobility and the delivery of essential services.
