East Godavari (తూర్పు గోదావరి) is a district in Andhra Pradesh, India, centred on Rajamahendravaram, also known as Rajahmundry, its administrative headquarters. Reshaped during the state’s 2022 district reorganisation, it takes its name from the Godavari River. The district is known for its river landscape, fertile agricultural areas and Telugu cultural heritage.
Telugu is the main language, and local life reflects strong literary, religious and farming traditions. Agriculture, agricultural trade, services and small businesses support the economy, with paddy an important crop. Rajamahendravaram’s riverfront ghats and bridges are prominent landmarks, while nearby Dowleswaram is associated with the barrage system that supports irrigation. Godavari Pushkaram periodically draws large numbers of pilgrims.
Common civic concerns include flood preparedness, reliable irrigation, drinking water, drainage and sanitation. Residents also care about road maintenance, public transport, healthcare, education and employment opportunities. Managing river pollution, maintaining public spaces and balancing urban growth with agricultural needs are recurring local priorities.
