East Delhi (पूर्वी दिल्ली) is a district in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India, on the eastern side of the Yamuna River. Part of the wider trans-Yamuna urban area, it is known for densely populated neighbourhoods, busy markets and strong connections to the rest of the capital through roads and the Delhi Metro.
The district brings together long-established communities and families with roots across northern India. Hindi is widely spoken, alongside other languages reflecting Delhi’s diversity. Retail, small businesses, professional services and commuting to jobs elsewhere in the city shape everyday economic life. Areas such as Preet Vihar and Mayur Vihar have residential and commercial importance, while the Akshardham temple complex is a prominent landmark.
Common civic concerns include traffic congestion, parking, air pollution, waste collection and drainage during the monsoon. Residents also care about reliable water supplies, safer streets, accessible public transport, well-maintained parks and public services that keep pace with dense urban development.
