Dimapur district lies in western Nagaland, India, along the border with Assam. Its main urban centre, also called Dimapur, is an important gateway to Nagaland and a major commercial and transport hub. Rail and air connections link the area with other parts of India. Following the creation of neighbouring districts, Dimapur’s administrative boundaries have become smaller.
The district has a diverse population, including several Naga communities and people from elsewhere in India. Markets, small businesses, transport and services support much of its economy. Daily life brings together different languages, food traditions, religious institutions and community celebrations. The Kachari ruins, known for their distinctive stone pillars, are a prominent reminder of the area’s historical connections with the Dimasa Kachari kingdom.
Common civic concerns include road conditions, traffic congestion, drainage and flooding, waste collection, reliable water and electricity, and access to healthcare and education. Residents also care about public safety, employment opportunities and orderly urban growth.
