Dhar (धार) is a district in western Madhya Pradesh, India, with its administrative headquarters in Dhar city. It spans parts of the Malwa plateau and the Narmada valley. The district is known for its Paramara-era heritage, the historic hilltop town of Mandu, and substantial tribal communities.
Bhil and Bhilala communities are central to local life, alongside other rural and urban populations. Hindi, Malvi and Bhili varieties are spoken across the district. Farming supports many households, while Pithampur is a major industrial centre with automobile and manufacturing businesses. Notable landmarks include Dhar Fort and Mandu’s Jahaz Mahal and other monuments. Bagh is recognised for its rock-cut Buddhist caves and traditional hand-block-printed textiles.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, road connectivity, healthcare and school access, especially in remote villages. Residents also care about agricultural livelihoods, tribal rights, industrial employment and pollution, and balancing tourism development with the conservation of historic sites.
