Dewas (देवास) is a district in western Madhya Pradesh, India, with its headquarters in Dewas city, near Indore. It spans parts of the Malwa plateau and extends towards the Narmada valley. The district is known for agriculture, manufacturing and the hilltop shrines of Chamunda Mata and Tulja Bhavani, prominent landmarks overlooking the city.
Hindi and Malwi are widely spoken, and local life reflects Malwa’s food, festivals and folk traditions. Farming supports many rural households, with soybean and wheat among the important crops. Dewas city is an industrial centre, home to engineering and other manufacturing businesses, as well as the Bank Note Press. The district also has connections to Hindustani classical music through the legacy of Kumar Gandharva.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, road maintenance, sanitation and access to healthcare and education. Residents also care about employment, agricultural prices, industrial pollution and balanced development across urban neighbourhoods and rural communities.
