Datia (दतिया) is a district in northern Madhya Pradesh, in the Bundelkhand region of central India. Its headquarters, Datia town, lies near Jhansi and the Uttar Pradesh border. The district is known for its Bundela heritage, historic architecture and religious sites, particularly the Pitambara Peeth shrine.
Hindi and Bundeli are commonly spoken, and local culture reflects Bundelkhand’s festivals, devotional traditions and rural life. Agriculture supports much of the district’s economy, alongside trade, services and pilgrimage-related businesses. Datia Palace, also known as Bir Singh Deo Palace, is a prominent landmark. Sonagiri, with its cluster of Jain temples, is another important pilgrimage destination within the district.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, road maintenance, sanitation and access to healthcare and education. Residents also care about agricultural livelihoods, employment opportunities and public transport. Preserving historic buildings and managing cleanliness, traffic and visitor facilities around pilgrimage sites are important local priorities.
