Dantewada (South Bastar), locally written as दंतेवाड़ा, is a district in southern Chhattisgarh, India, within the Bastar region. Its headquarters is Dantewada town. Known for forested landscapes, Adivasi heritage and the iron ore-rich Bailadila hills, the district combines rural settlements with important mining centres.
Adivasi communities, including Gond and Maria groups, shape local languages, festivals and cultural traditions. Farming, forest produce collection, small-scale trade and iron ore mining support livelihoods. The Danteshwari Temple in Dantewada is a major religious landmark closely associated with Bastar’s cultural identity. Barsoor is known for its historic temples, while Kirandul and Bacheli are prominent mining towns.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, drinking water, healthcare, schooling and access to public services in remote villages. Residents also face questions around forest rights, mining’s environmental effects and local employment. Long-running conflict involving Maoist groups and security forces makes safety, displacement and continuity of essential services important public issues.
