Dangs (Ahwa), locally written as ડાંગ (આહવા), is a district in southern Gujarat, India, bordering Maharashtra. Its administrative headquarters is Ahwa. Set in the forested hills of the Western Ghats, the district is known for its woodland landscapes, seasonal waterfalls and Saputara, a prominent hill station.
The population is predominantly tribal, with community traditions reflected in local languages, music, dance and festivals. The Dang Darbar gathering at Ahwa is an important cultural occasion. Agriculture, forest-based livelihoods, agricultural labour and tourism support the economy. Saputara Lake, Gira waterfall near Waghai and the district’s forest areas are notable attractions.
Common civic concerns include dependable drinking water, access to healthcare and schools, and transport links between scattered villages. Residents also have a stake in forest rights, sustainable livelihoods and employment opportunities close to home. Balancing tourism and infrastructure development with forest conservation, alongside maintaining roads during the monsoon, remains important for the district’s future.
