Churachandpur (চুরাচাঁদপুর) is a hill district in southwestern Manipur, India, bordering Mizoram and Myanmar. Its headquarters is Churachandpur town, also widely known as Lamka. The district is known for its wooded hills, rural settlements and cultural diversity. Changes to district boundaries mean older descriptions may cover a larger area than today’s district.
The population includes several tribal communities, notably Zomi and Kuki groups, with distinct languages and traditions. Churches, community organisations, music and weaving play important roles in local life. Farming, small businesses, public employment and trade support livelihoods. Town markets and surrounding hill landscapes are prominent features, while community institutions serve as important gathering places.
Residents’ civic concerns include road connectivity, reliable electricity, drinking water, healthcare, education and employment. Since the violence that began in Manipur in 2023, public safety, displacement, access to essential services and rebuilding trust between communities have become especially urgent, alongside debates over land, representation and local administration.
