Chhatarpur (छतरपुर) is a district in northern Madhya Pradesh, in India’s Bundelkhand region, bordering Uttar Pradesh. Its administrative headquarters is Chhatarpur town. The district is best known for Khajuraho, whose celebrated temple complexes form a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for Chandela-era architecture and sculpture.
Hindi and Bundeli shape everyday conversation and local cultural life. Farming, trade, services and tourism support livelihoods, with rural communities forming an important part of the district’s population. Khajuraho’s temples and dance festival attract visitors from India and abroad, while the Ken River and nearby natural landscapes add to the area’s appeal.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation and resilience to drought in the wider Bundelkhand region. Residents also care about roads, public transport, healthcare, schools and employment opportunities. Managing tourism, protecting historic sites, improving sanitation and balancing development with river and landscape conservation are important priorities across the district.
