Chandrapur (चंद्रपूर) is a district in eastern Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, bordering Telangana. Its administrative headquarters is Chandrapur city. Known for coal mining, thermal power generation and extensive forests, the district is also home to Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, a major wildlife destination.
Marathi is widely spoken, alongside languages used by tribal and other communities. Gond heritage forms an important part of the district’s history and culture. Farming, mining, power production, forest-based livelihoods and tourism support the economy. Cotton, soybean and paddy are among its crops. Notable landmarks include Chandrapur’s historic Gond-era fortifications and Mahakali Temple, while Tadoba’s forests attract visitors interested in wildlife.
Common civic concerns include air and water pollution, the environmental effects of mining, reliable drinking water and access to healthcare. Residents also care about roads, employment, agricultural support and public services in rural and tribal areas. Forest conservation, human-wildlife conflict and balancing industrial development with community health are important local issues.
