Chamarajanagar (ಚಾಮರಾಜನಗರ) is Karnataka’s southernmost district, bordering Tamil Nadu and Kerala - Keralam. Its headquarters is Chamarajanagar town. The district is known for forested hills, wildlife habitats and pilgrimage sites. Bandipur National Park and the Biligiri Rangan Hills are prominent features of its landscape.
Kannada is widely spoken, alongside other regional languages. Soliga communities have longstanding ties to the district’s forests. Agriculture, including cultivation of ragi, maize and sugarcane, supports many households, while sericulture, trade and tourism also contribute to livelihoods. Notable landmarks include the Chamarajeshwara Temple, the hill shrine at Biligiri Rangan Hills and Male Mahadeshwara Hills, which draws large numbers of pilgrims.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, road maintenance and access to healthcare and education, particularly in remote settlements. Residents also navigate human–wildlife conflict, forest conservation and livelihood needs. Public transport, employment opportunities, waste management and services around pilgrimage centres are other important local issues.
