Central Delhi (मध्य दिल्ली) is a district in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India. It covers parts of the capital’s historic urban core and is known for its dense neighbourhoods, busy markets and layers of Mughal, colonial and modern heritage. It is one of Delhi’s districts, rather than a name for the entire city centre.
Residents include long-established families, traders, professionals and migrant workers. Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and other languages reflect the area’s diverse communities. Wholesale and retail trade, small businesses and services support the local economy. Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid and the Red Fort are prominent landmarks associated with the district, alongside traditional bazaars, places of worship and a rich street-food culture.
Common civic concerns include traffic congestion, parking, air pollution, waste collection and reliable water supplies. Residents and businesses also care about pedestrian safety, fire safety in crowded markets, heritage conservation and improvements to ageing buildings and public infrastructure.
