Bishnupur (বিষ্ণুপুর) is a district in Manipur, northeastern India, south of Imphal in the Manipur Valley. Its headquarters is Bishnupur town. The district is known for its historic Vishnu temple and its close connection to Loktak Lake, whose floating vegetation, called phumdis, shapes the landscape and local livelihoods.
Meitei communities form a major part of the population, alongside other communities. Manipuri traditions, festivals, dance and weaving contribute to cultural life. Agriculture, fishing, small businesses and tourism support the economy. Important landmarks include the INA memorial complex at Moirang and Keibul Lamjao National Park, associated with the endangered sangai deer and Loktak’s floating wetland habitat.
Common civic concerns include protecting Loktak Lake while sustaining fishing communities, improving roads, drainage, drinking water and healthcare, and expanding education and employment opportunities. Flooding, waste management and wetland conservation also matter. Amid Manipur’s wider conflict, residents face concerns about safety, displacement, access to services and rebuilding trust between communities.
