Bikaner (बीकानेर) is a district in northwestern Rajasthan, India, in the Thar Desert. Its headquarters, Bikaner city, was founded by Rao Bika in the fifteenth century. The district is known for its desert landscapes, historic forts, camel heritage and Bikaneri bhujia, a widely recognised savoury snack.
Rajasthani traditions shape local language, food, music and festivals. Agriculture, livestock rearing, food processing, handicrafts and tourism support livelihoods, with irrigation enabling cultivation in parts of the district. Junagarh Fort and Lalgarh Palace are prominent landmarks in Bikaner city, while the Karni Mata Temple at Deshnoke draws pilgrims and visitors. Camel breeding and research also contribute to the district’s identity.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation access, groundwater conservation and resilience to drought and extreme heat. Residents also care about roads, sanitation, waste management, healthcare and education, particularly in rural settlements. Employment opportunities, support for farmers and livestock keepers, and heritage conservation remain important local priorities.
