Bhavnagar (ભાવનગર) is a district in southeastern Gujarat, India, on the Saurashtra peninsula beside the Gulf of Khambhat. Its administrative headquarters is Bhavnagar city, a former princely state capital. The district is known for maritime trade, coastal landscapes, Jain pilgrimage sites and the ship-recycling industry at Alang.
Gujarati is the main language, and local life reflects Saurashtra’s traditions of food, festivals, commerce and craftsmanship. Agriculture, trade, manufacturing and ship recycling support livelihoods across its towns and villages. Important landmarks include the Jain temples on Shatrunjaya Hill near Palitana, Velavadar Blackbuck National Park and Bhavnagar city’s Takhteshwar Temple.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, road maintenance, drainage, sanitation and access to healthcare and education. Coastal communities also face questions around fisheries, cyclone preparedness and environmental protection. Industrial pollution, worker safety and responsible ship recycling are significant public issues, alongside employment opportunities and balanced development across urban and rural areas.
