Bharatpur (भरतपुर) is a district in eastern Rajasthan, India, near the borders of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Its headquarters is Bharatpur city. The district is best known for Keoladeo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose wetlands attract migratory birds and visitors from around the world.
The area has strong connections to Braj culture, reflected in local speech, religious traditions and festivals such as Holi. Agriculture, dairy farming, trade and tourism support livelihoods, with mustard and wheat among important crops. Bharatpur’s history is closely associated with its Jat rulers, especially Maharaja Suraj Mal. Lohagarh Fort and the city’s historic gates are prominent landmarks.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, drainage, sanitation, road maintenance and access to healthcare and education. Residents also care about farm incomes, irrigation, employment and public transport. Protecting Keoladeo’s water supply and wildlife habitats while supporting surrounding communities is an important local environmental issue.
