Bharananganam is a village near Pala in Kottayam district, Kerala - Keralam, India. Set in the green, hilly landscape of the Meenachil region, it is best known as a Christian pilgrimage destination associated with Saint Alphonsa, India’s first woman to be canonised by the Catholic Church.
Its principal landmark is the Saint Alphonsa shrine, which draws pilgrims throughout the year, particularly around her feast in July. Churches, schools and local institutions play important roles in community life, alongside the traditions of other faiths. Agriculture, especially rubber cultivation, supports the surrounding economy, while shops, services and pilgrimage-related activity provide local livelihoods.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, traffic and parking near pilgrimage sites, reliable drinking water and waste management. Residents also have a stake in protecting streams and agricultural land, improving public transport and healthcare access, and ensuring that visitor facilities develop without disrupting everyday village life.
