Bastar (बस्तर) is a district in southern Chhattisgarh, India, with its administrative headquarters at Jagdalpur. Part of the wider Bastar region, it is known for forested landscapes, Adivasi heritage and waterfalls. Chitrakote Falls on the Indravati River and Kanger Valley National Park are prominent attractions.
Communities including Gond and other Adivasi groups contribute to the district’s languages, traditions and crafts. Halbi and Hindi are widely used alongside local languages. Bastar Dussehra is a major cultural celebration centred on local deities and longstanding ceremonial traditions. Agriculture, forest produce, handicrafts, trade and public services support livelihoods. Jagdalpur’s markets connect surrounding villages with the district’s urban economy.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, drinking water, healthcare, schooling and access to services in remote settlements. Forest rights, livelihood security and the conservation of forests and wildlife are important issues. Residents also have a stake in responsible tourism, sanitation and development that respects local communities and cultural traditions.
