Barwani (बड़वानी) is a district in southwestern Madhya Pradesh, India, bordering Maharashtra and Gujarat. Its headquarters is Barwani town. Part of the Nimar region, the district is known for its Narmada River landscapes, Satpura hills and substantial tribal population. Farming and the river shape much of local life.
Bhil and Bhilala communities are central to the district’s cultural identity, alongside other communities. Nimadi, Hindi and tribal languages are spoken, and festivals, weekly markets and traditional arts connect rural settlements. Agriculture, agricultural trade and small businesses support the economy, with cotton, maize and other crops grown locally. Bawangaja, a Jain pilgrimage site famous for its monumental standing statue of Adinath, is a prominent landmark.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, roads, healthcare and access to schools in remote villages. Residents also care about agricultural livelihoods, employment, tribal rights and forest access. Narmada-related displacement, rehabilitation and environmental protection remain important public issues.
