Bargarh (ବରଗଡ଼) is a district in western Odisha, India, with its headquarters in Bargarh town. Bordering Chhattisgarh, it includes productive agricultural plains and the wooded hills around Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary. The district is known for rice cultivation, handloom weaving and Dhanu Yatra, a large open-air theatrical festival centred on the story of Krishna and Kansa.
Odia and Sambalpuri are widely spoken, and local life reflects western Odisha’s music, dance and textile traditions. Agriculture, rice milling, trade and weaving support many livelihoods. Bargarh’s weaving communities contribute to the celebrated Sambalpuri textile tradition. Notable destinations include the Nrusinghanath temple near Paikmal and Debrigarh, close to the Hirakud reservoir.
Common civic concerns include reliable irrigation, fair crop prices, agricultural procurement and employment beyond farming. Residents also care about roads, drinking water, healthcare and education, particularly in rural areas. Supporting handloom livelihoods, improving sanitation and balancing tourism with forest and wildlife conservation are other important local priorities.
