Bandipore, locally written as बांदीपोरा and also spelled Bandipora, is a district in northern Kashmir, in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Its headquarters is Bandipora town. The district is known for its setting beside Wular Lake, mountain landscapes and the Gurez Valley near the Line of Control.
Kashmiri is widely spoken, while Gurez has a distinct Shina-speaking community. Local culture reflects traditions of hospitality, handicrafts and seasonal mountain life. Farming, horticulture, fishing, public employment and tourism support livelihoods. Wular Lake is an important wetland and fishing resource, while Gurez and the Habba Khatoon peak are prominent natural attractions.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, winter connectivity, healthcare, schools and employment opportunities for young people. Residents also have a stake in drinking water, electricity and waste management. Protecting Wular Lake, managing flood risks and balancing tourism development with environmental conservation are important district-wide issues, alongside access to services in remote settlements.
