Balangir (ବଲାଙ୍ଗୀର) is a district in western Odisha, India, with its administrative headquarters in Balangir town. It is known for its agrarian landscape, regional cultural traditions and connections to the former princely state of Patna. The district includes rural settlements, market towns, hills and forested areas.
Odia and the regional Sambalpuri or Kosali speech are widely used. Nuakhai, the harvest festival, is an important expression of community life, alongside folk music, dance and local religious celebrations. Agriculture supports many households, while trade, services and small enterprises contribute to the economy. Notable heritage sites include the temples at Ranipur-Jharial and the Harishankar temple, set amid the Gandhamardan hills.
Common civic concerns include reliable irrigation, drinking water, drought resilience and opportunities for local employment. Seasonal labour migration, access to healthcare and education, rural roads and agricultural support also matter. Residents in growing towns face additional questions around sanitation, waste management and dependable public services.
