Balaghat (बालाघाट) is a district in southeastern Madhya Pradesh, India, bordering Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. Its administrative headquarters is Balaghat town. Known for forests, rice cultivation and mineral resources, the district includes parts of the Satpura landscape and the Wainganga river basin. Portions of Kanha Tiger Reserve lie within the district.
The population includes rural farming communities, urban residents and Adivasi communities, including Gond and Baiga people. Hindi and regional languages shape everyday life, alongside varied folk traditions and festivals. Agriculture, forest-based livelihoods, mining and trade support the economy. Malanjkhand is a major copper-mining centre, while manganese mining is also important. Forest landscapes and wildlife tourism are notable features.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, irrigation, drinking water, healthcare and education, particularly in remote villages. Residents also care about farm incomes, employment, forest rights and access to public services. Balancing mining and development with environmental protection and wildlife conservation remains an important local issue.
