Anuppur (अनुपपूर) is a district in eastern Madhya Pradesh, India, bordering Chhattisgarh. Its headquarters is Anuppur town. The district is known for forested landscapes, coal resources and Amarkantak, a major pilgrimage destination associated with the source of the Narmada River.
The population includes rural farming communities and tribal communities, whose traditions contribute to local cultural life. Hindi and regional speech varieties are commonly heard. Agriculture, coal mining, trade and public services support livelihoods, while pilgrimage tourism is important around Amarkantak. Temples, sacred water sites and surrounding hills are prominent landmarks, alongside the district’s mining settlements and railway connections.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, road maintenance, healthcare access and the quality of government schools. Residents also have a stake in employment opportunities, land and forest rights, and the environmental effects of mining. Protecting forests and river sources, improving sanitation, and managing visitor facilities at pilgrimage sites are important local priorities.
