Anantnag (अनंतनाग) is a district in the southern Kashmir Valley, in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Its administrative headquarters is Anantnag town. The district is known for its springs, mountain scenery, orchards and visitor destinations, including Pahalgam. It is also an important gateway for the Amarnath pilgrimage.
Kashmiri is widely spoken, and local life reflects the valley’s traditions of handicrafts, food and religious observance. Agriculture, apple growing, trade and tourism support many livelihoods. Notable places include the historic Martand Sun Temple, the gardens and spring at Achabal, and Kokernag’s gardens and freshwater springs. Markets and service centres connect surrounding villages with the district’s towns.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water and electricity, road maintenance, healthcare access, education and employment opportunities. Residents also have a stake in protecting water sources, improving waste management and managing tourism responsibly. Winter connectivity, flood preparedness and support for farming and horticulture remain important public priorities.
